The Third Ward, an important area for Black history and contemporary Black culture in Houston, is where Solange staged multiple screenings of When I Get Home upon its premiere last year. Locations included Texan Tire and Wheel, the Black-owned Unity National Bank, the Ensemble Theatre, where she stared in The Wiz as a young person; Emancipation Park, without which Juneteenth would be nothing but a vague notion; and Vita Mutari, the hair salon her and her sister Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles-Lawson used to own, a kind of ground zero for Black society in Houston.
Solange first introduced When I Get Home with her album of the same name in 2019 as an introspective exploration of what home means. Visually stunning and eclectic, the film features surreal and futuristic imagery while celebrating Black culture and paying homage to her hometown of Houston. Scenes range from Black cowboys riding through the city to glittery spaceship settings to various dance sequences, all set to songs from her celebrated LP like "Down with the Clique," "Almeda," "Stay Flo," and more. In anticipation of the album’s release, the home page on Solange’s website directed to blackplanet.com/solange/, where she released teaser visuals on her profile. She also created a hotline using the phone number from Houston rapper Mike Jones’ 2005 song “Back Then” to share snippets and information about the album.
The film also premiered on Solange’s Black Planet page, a sly nod to recent history and one that forecasted our current pandemic-era “virtual” cultural paradigm. Solange premiered the film in nine local venues for members of the Black Houston community including "her mother's old hair salon; Unity National Bank, the only black owned Texas banking institution; and Emancipation Gym, the only public park open to African Americans in the Jim Crow era." In a year-end essay for Slate, Ann Powers cited When I Get Home as proof that the format is not dead but rather undergoing a "metamorphosis", with artists such as Solange utilizing the concept album through the culturally-relevant autobiographical narratives.
The Internet’s Steve Lacy also contributed production, which Solange hinted at when she previously told the Times that the two had been “jamming” together. "I'm so grateful for you guys allowing me the space and time. So so so grateful. Ima be celebrating all week long the coming of home 🖤." Solange’s themes of emotional strife and gendered expectations are intimately bound up with her concept of home.
